VIRAL SACH: Do we pay 70 per cent of income in taxes?
A message is going viral that says only Rs 20-30 out of Rs 100 goes in the pocket of a tax-payer. Rest Rs 70 goes in taxes. What’s the truth of the message?
It is being claimed in the message that populist schemes are being launched for the poor and the rich doesn’t care about the tax. It is only the middle-class that is reeling under stiff tax regime.
It is also being claimed in the message that a person pays Rs 190 tax on petrol bill of Rs 283.
The message also claimed that if the bill of food is Rs 1,000, a person pays Rs 303 in taxes. We talked to tax expert Raj Agarwal.
It must be noted that a person who earns from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh has to pay 10 percent. A person who earns more than Rs 5 lakh and less than Rs 10 lakh has to pay 20 per cent tax. But, someone who earns more than Rs 10 lakh has to pay 30 per cent tax.
Out of the taxes listed in the message, only two are new. Rest all are old taxes. Hence, it is a false message.
