Salem Man Dies After Beaten Up By Police In Tamil Nadu, Special Sub-Inspector Arrested
A Special Sub-inspector was arrested after a 47-year-old man he repeatedly beaten up at Pappinaickenpatti checkpost died on Wednesday.
Salem: A Special Sub-inspector was arrested after a 47-year-old man he repeatedly beaten up at Pappinaickenpatti checkpost died on Wednesday.
A Murugesan was a fruit stall vender from Edayappati in Salem district and he had his business in Vazhapadi. He was mercilessly beaten up by three police officers at the Pappinaickenpatti checkpost under Yethapur police station limits on Tuesday evening. The officers hit Murugesan who was under the influence of alcohol, with the heavy wooden sticks until he fell unconscious.
Disturbing visuals in the video where three police men are brutally thrashing and beating the man up, has triggered anger on social media. The video was shot by a local man.
According to the local residents, police attacked Murugesan as he argued with them in a drunken state. He was allegedly on his way back to Salem in a two-wheeler from visiting a liquor shop in Kallakurichi district.
Following the incident, Murugesan was rushed to the Primary Healthcare Centre at Thumbal by his relatives and later admitted him to the Government Hospital at Attur.
But, later he was referred to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries today morning.
Following his death, several locals gathered at the Yethapur police station and demanded strict action against the officers accountable for Murugan's death. The Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) involved the attack has been arrested.
