The Alto is the only car to have registered a positive year-on-year (YoY) growth, while the redi-GO is the only model to have seen a month-on-month (MoM) increase in sales

There are four major players in the entry-level car segment in India, namely the Maruti Suzuki Alto (both 800 & K10), Hyundai Eon, Renault Kwid & the Datsun redi-GO. The Alto has always had an upper hand in this segment, topping the sales chart by far, consistently. No prizes for guessing then that the Alto continues to be the bestseller in June 2018.

It is noteworthy, however, that there’s been a drop of close to 13 per cent in the overall sales of the entry-level segment, when compared to May 2018 sales. Except the redi-GO, all the cars have witnessed a drop in sales for the month of June.

Here is the month-on-month (MoM) sales comparison of the four entry-level hatchbacks.

Takeaways

  • The segment, as a whole, registered a drop in MoM sales

  • All cars in the segment registered fewer numbers than their half-yearly sales average

  • Leading the sales chart for the month of June 2018 was the Maruti Alto (800 & K10), followed by the Renault Kwid and the Eon. Despite a positive bump, the Datsun redi-GO sits at the bottom of the table

  • With no major updates whatsoever, of late, the sales of the Eon continue to decline, but not drastically

Six months sales trend - Renault’s Kwid has turned out to be the more popular car compared to the Eon in the last six months. Renault has plans to introduce more features in the top-spec Kwid and that should give buyers another reason to buy one. The Eon, on the other hand, may not see an update soon. Hyundai will instead launch a new small car in September 2018 which will probably be called the Santro. But it’s expected to be positioned above the Eon, where Hyundai had the i10 previously.

Takeaway

  • Compared to its market share in June 2017, the Maruti Alto has posted a growth of 5.93 per cent this year. The Alto is one of the older models in this segment, but still manages to maintain its lead consistently

  • However, for the same period, the Kwid looks to have lost its ground with its market share shrinking to 16.77 per cent from 20.3 per cent last year

  • The Eon’s share is gradually showing a dip as well. But the negligible drop still seems to be commendable for a car which hasn’t seen any substantial upgrade in the recent past
