Former Gujarat CM Madhavsinh Solanki Passes Away; PM Modi Mourns Veteran Cong Leader's Demise
Expressing condolences over Solanki's demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was a formidable leader who will be remembered for his rich service to society.

Expressing condolences over Solanki's demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was a formidable leader who will be remembered for his rich service to society.
In a following tweet, PM Modi said that veteran politician beyond politics enjoyed reading and was passionate about culture, who would often discuss about new books.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi also mourned the unfortunate demise saying "He will be remembered for his contribution in strengthening the Congress ideology and promoting social justice."
Known for his KHAM (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, Muslim) formula, Solanki came to power in Gujarat in the 1980s when he stitched the coalition tilting power balance from Patel-Brahmins-Baniyas to OBCs, Dalits and tribals in the caste constellation of the state. He introduced the reservation for socially and economically backward classes.
From there on, the senior Congress leader started to shine and went on to serve as the Chief Minister of Gujarat four times. He first took over the CM seat for a brief time in 1976. In 1981, Solanki again became the Chief Minister of Gujarat. In 1985, he resigned but later returned to power winning 149 out of 182 assembly seats.
A lawyer by Profession, the veteran Congressman during his active years also served as the External Affairs Minister of India.
