Woman Staff Allegedly 'Strangulated' In War-Like Situation Between Govt And Oppn In Rajya Sabha
Escalating his attack on the Opposition, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said this incident has tarnished the reputation of the august house.
New Delhi: Amid reports that attempts were made to strangulate a woman security staff, Union Minister and Leader of House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal on Wednesday demanded that a high-level committee be formed to look into the incidents of gross indiscipline by the Opposition members.
Escalating his attack on the Opposition, Goyal said this incident has tarnished the reputation of the august house.
“The Opposition members even tried to stop me and the Parliamentary Affairs Minister from coming out of our chambers. This is unfortunate. Such behaviour should never be tolerated by the House and the country,” he added.
Goyal further said the Opposition came with the mindset of not letting the House function from day one of the Monsoon Session.
Alleging heavy deployment of marshals to prevent their protests, the Opposition MPs walked out of the Rajya Sabha earlier this evening.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar expressed his disappointment over the incident and said this is an attack on democracy.
“In my 55 years of parliamentary career, I never saw the way the women MPs were attacked today (in Rajya Sabha). More than 40 men and women were brought into the House from outside. It is painful. It is an attack on democracy,” ANI quoted Pawar as saying.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament concluded on Wednesday with both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die.
The Monsoon Session, which began on July 19, was slated to go on till August 13.
