With 843 fresh Covid cases, India recorded its highest single-day tally of infections in over four months on Saturday. The number of active cases has climbed to 5,389, according to Union health ministry data. With the fresh infections, the country's caseload increased to 4.46 crore (4,46,94,349). The death toll rose to 5,30,799 with four fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated. While Jharkhand and Maharashtra reported one death each, two were reconciled by Kerala.


At 5,839, the active cases now comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections. The national Covi-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.80 per cent, according to the health ministry website.


The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,58,161 and the case fatality rate stands at 1.19 per cent. According to the ministry's website, 220.64 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered under the nationwide vaccination drive. Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Thursday wrote to the State governments of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka to follow a five-fold strategy of test, track, treat and vaccinations as these states witness a rise in Covid-19 cases.


India has observed a significant decline in the number of Covid-19 cases during the past few months. However, in the past few weeks a rise in cases has been noted specifically in certain parts of the country with a total of 2,082 cases reported in the week ending March 8, 2023, which rose to 3,264 cases in the week ending March 15, said the Union Home Ministry's letter.

There are few States which are reporting a higher number of cases indicating the possible localised spread of infection and there is a need to follow a risk assessment-based approach to prevent and contain the infection, without losing the gains made so far in the fight against the pandemic, said the Union Health Ministry. In the nationwide Covid vaccination drive, 220,64,80,756 doses were administered so far.
