Another Man Lynched To Death In Bengal's Bhangar Despite Crackdown Efforts

A man was beaten to death in Bengal's Bhangar over suspicion of theft in the early hours of Sunday.

The cases of mob violence in West Bengal continue to surge as another man was beaten to death by a group of people over suspicion of theft. The latest incident occurred in Bhangar, located in South 24 Parganas. The incident occurred despite Mamata Banerjee-led state government's orders to the police to increase their vigilance in the state to curb the rising mob violence cases.

The deceased, identified as Azgar Mollah, was a resident of Phoolbari. He was attacked by locals near a police station in the early hours of Sunday, India Today reported.

The report also stated that the police did not attend to the victim's body for a long time, and it lay on the road until the villagers spotted and recovered it.

Locals claimed that the residents had suspected Mollah of being a thief after increased incidents of theft were being reported in the locality. After being beaten up by the group of locals, he fell unconcsious and later succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the attack.

"Theft has been happening in this area for a long time. There is a night guard, but as soon as they leave, the incidents of theft increase. Today, one person was caught. He was tied up with a rope. Locals came and beat him up. The man fainted and later succumbed to his injuries,” the report stated a resident of the area, Sheikh Rafiqul Hasan as saying.

The victim's family members arrived at the spot after the incident and stated that they were unaware of why it occurred.

Lately, there has been a rapid increase in the mob violence-related cases in Bengal. In the last week of June alone, a total of 12 cases of mob violence have been registered. Out of these cases, one of them involved a woman who was flogged by a mob publicly in Uttar Dinajpur district, which led to a major political outcry.

The man involved in this incident was identified as Tajmul alias JCB, a Trinamool Congress leader of Chopra area.

In another similar incident, a man was beaten to death by a mob in Bengal's Hooghly on July 1. Police probe revealed that the mob had beate him since he had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from the accused, which he had failed to repay.
