Mamata Banerjee had lost the assembly elections to BJP candidate Shubhendu Adhikari. Trinamool Congress leader Shobhan Dev had then resigned as MLA, paving the way for assembly by-elections for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He had become a part of Legislative Assembly after winning the assembly seat from Bhawanipur.
This assembly seat has been the traditional seat of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. But when CM Mamata Banerjee decided to compete for the Nandigram assembly election seat against Shubhendu Adhikari, Shobhan Dev stood up as the TMC candidate from here.
