Weather News: Delhi To Get Respite From Heat, Rain Havoc In Hyderabad, Raj Swelters At 46 Degrees

As the grip of heatwave strengthens across India, here's the update from parts of the country. Delhi recorded the season's just-below-average mark, and Rajasthan sizzled on Wednesday.

The scorching heat continues to grip parts of India as Delhi recorded a temperature of 38.2 degrees Celcius on Wednesday, slightly below the season’s average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Meanwhile, most areas of Rajasthan are experiencing intense heat, with Barmer registering a sweltering 46 degrees Celcius. IMD issued a yellow alert for parts of Kerala until May 9 due to the possibility of heatwave conditions. Amidst these weather extremes, havoc caused by rain-related incidents has killed nine persons in Telangana’s Hyderabad after a retaining wall at an under-construction apartment came crashing down due to heavy rains in Bachupally area.

Mercury Marks 38.2 Degrees In Delhi, Just Below Season’s Average 

The temperature in the capital, Delhi, settled at 38.2 degrees Celcius on Wednesday, slightly below the seasonal average, as reported by the India Meteorological Department. Relative humidity ranged between 46 per cent and 62 per cent throughout the day. 

The weather office, as per a report by PTI, predicts strong surface winds on Thursday, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to settle at 39 and 26 degrees Celcius, respectively. Slight rain is expected to grace Delhites tomorrow. 

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the “poor” category with a reading of 225. 

Rajasthan Likely To Witness Intense Heatwave On May 9, 10

Meanwhile, Rajasthan witnessed scorching temperatures, with the day’s maximum temperature hitting 46 degrees Celcius in Barmer. The weather department has issued heatwave warnings for several areas of the state over the next few days. 

In Jaipur, temperatures soared above 40 degrees, with the capital recording a maximum temperature of 42.8 degrees. 

Meteorological forecasts indicate that severe heat and heatwaves are expected to persist in the state, with temperatures likely to increase by 1-2 degrees over the next 48 hours. An intense heatwave has been predicted for the state on May 9 and 10, with the possibility of light rain in some areas due to an active western disturbance from May 10-11.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Kerala Amid Continuing Heatwave 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a yellow alert for Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, and Kozhikode districts until May 9, due to the possibility of heatwave conditions persisting in the region. 

According to IMD, maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 39 degrees Celcius in Kollam, Palakkad, and Kozhikode, 38 degrees Celciusn in Thiruvananthapuram, and Alappuzha, and 36 degrees in Malappuram and Kasaragod districts until May 10. These temperatures are notably higher than the normal range for this time of the year, with deviations of three to five degrees. 

“Heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail at one or two places in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, and Kozhikode districts on May 8 and 9 (YELLOW WARNING)," stated the IMD. Additionally,” the IMD said. 

9 Dead In Hyderabad As Wall Collapses Amid Heavy Rain

Nine persons, including a four-year-old child, were killed in Hyderabad due to two separate rain-related incidents, news agency PTI reported citing officials. 

The incident occurred in the Bachupally area, where seven people, including a child, were killed when a retaining wall at an under-construction apartment collapsed amidst heavy rain on Tuesday. 

In another incident, Begumpeet police retrieved the bodies of two men aged between 35 to 40 from a drain in SR Nagar, as reported by PTI. 

Heavy rainfall severely impacted Hyderabad and various parts of Telangana on Tuesday.
