New Delhi: As Jammu and Kashmir is preparing for the Independence Day celebrations, a Tricolour was hoisted atop the iconic ‘Ghanta Ghar’ in Srinagar on Thursday, news agency PTI reported. The famous clock tower, located at the heart of the city, was recently renovated under the Srinagar Smart City Project. Speaking to the news agency, Chief Executive Officer of the Srinagar Smart City Project, Athar Amir Khan said hoisting the Tricolour was a historic moment for the city. The national flag was hoisted atop the clock tower to mark the 76th Independence Day.


“Ghanta Ghar and Lal Chowk Srinagar are very iconic places which are being decorated by Tiranga under the Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav campaign,” Khan told PTI.

Speaking about the developmental works that are underway for several months in the Lal Chowk area, the commercial hub of Srinagar, Athar Khan said that the project has reached its final stage and will be inaugurated before August 15.

“We have almost finished the work at Lal Chowk; it is a matter of four-five days more. The finishing touches, which include installation, light fittings, etc. are being done. We will finish the entire work before August 15 and it will be inaugurated before that,” PTI quoted Athar Amir Khan as saying.


Meanwhile, several places across Srinagar and the Union Territory are being decked up as people are gearing up to mark the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ by taking out tiranga rallies, Athar Amir Khan added.
