New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, Assam to offer prayers on Sunday amid his three-day visit to the northeast. He was accompanied by state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Amit Shah visited the temple before chairing the 70th plenary session of the North Eastern Council, in Guwahati.
Shah began his three-day visit on Friday of Sikkim and Assam. On Saturday, he served as the moderator of a regional conference on "Drug Trafficking and National Security."
While addressing the meeting Shah said, "Our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of 'Drug-free India' on the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. All the government departments and government agencies are working towards it. But, it is also our responsibility to make sure that our PM's target is completed."
"Today, regional cooperation is being held on illegal smuggling and national security. Earlier, we held a summit in Chandigarh with the northern states from Kashmir to Delhi. Similarly, today we have brought all the north-eastern states together for the fight against drugs," Shah said, according to news agency ANI.
He will inaugurate the two-day conference of the superintendent of police (SP) around 4:30 pm on Sunday along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa. It is scheduled to be held at the Police Training Centre at Dergaon in Assam's Golaghat district.
The SP conference to be inaugurated by Shah will be the third such conference in the state. Earlier, the second two-day SP conference was held at Duliajan in Assam's Dibrugarh district in January this year. The first SP conference was held at Kaziranga in June last year.
Previously, Biswa and Shah chaired a review meeting on Friday over the Assam floods in Guwahati. During the meeting, Shah asserted that the state should come up with a long-term plan which will protect from floods in the decades to come.
