New Delhi: A highly dramatic encounter of notorious gangster Vikas Dubey, who was on the run after killing eight policemen in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur on Last Friday, July 3, has brought down the curtains on the week long chase. After on run for almost six days, Dubey was arrested on Thursday at the Mahakal temple. Just a day after his arrest at the Ujjain temple, the history-sheeter Vikas Dubey was shot dead in an encounter by STF on Friday morning in Kanpur.

After his encounter killing, several allegations are being made on Uttar Pradesh government and police that he was eliminated because he had become a threat for the system. However, the police insist that he was killed in self-defence after he tried to escape the police custody.

A bid to bring murderers of eight Uttar Pradesh cops has turned into a political showdown. But this is not the first controversial encounter at the hands of Indian police.

Here's a look back at five top controversial encounters in the history of India:

Batla House: 

The Batla House encounter took place on September 19, 2008, when a team of the Delhi Police Special Cell raided a Batla House flat, following a tip-off that terrorists allegedly involved in the September 13, 2008 serial blasts in the national capital were holed up there.

The incident took place against Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorists in Batla House locality in Jamia Nagar, Delhi.

In the course of raid, two suspected terrorists were killed and two other suspects arrested. During the raid, a decorated police officer Inspector M C Sharma was killed.

Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, who spearheaded the encounter, had become more known after this as he had 70 encounters, a record 22 convictions from 30 cases and nine Gallantry Awards.

Hyderabad Encounter Case 2019: 

Th four accused in the Hyderabad gangrape and murder case of a Veterinary doctor last year, were killed at the same place by the Telangana Police at the same spot where the  victim's body was set afire after the gang rape on November 27.

The 25-year-old veterinarian was gang raped by four truck drivers and cleaners near the Outer Ring Road at Shamshabad on the night of November 27. The four accused later dumped the body near Shadnagar town, about 28 km away, and set it afire.

The accused were shot dead when they allegedly tried to escape from the crime scene where the police had brought them to re-enact the incident. During the case, VC Sajjanar was the commissioner of police who was highly hailed as Hero by many people in Hyderabad.

Hizbul Mujahideen chief Riyaz Naikoo Encounter:

In a major victory to security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, the Hizbul Mujahideen chief Riyaz Naikoo was killed during an anti-terrorism operation in May, days after five security personnel were martyred in Jammu and Kashmir' Handwara operation.

Hizbul Mujahideen commander had come to visit his home in Beighpora village when the joint team of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the local police, moved in quickly to seal all entry and exit points of the village.

As per the inputs by the Central Reserve Police Force, joint troops recovered bodies of 2 terrorists, among them one was identified as Hizbul Commander Riyaz Naikoo, who was categorized as A++” militant and was in the most wanted list of terrorists in Kashmir for several years.

Naikoo took over as the commander of Hizbul Mujahideen after the outfit's poster boy and commander Burhan Wani was killed in a gunfight with the security forces in Kokarnag area in Anantnag district on July 8, 2016.

Sohrabuddin Sheikh Encounter:  

Sohrabuddin Sheikh, a gangster reported to have alleged links with terror organisation, and his wife Kausar Bi were killed in another encounter by the Gujarat and Rajasthan police in December 2006. In fact, their aide Tulsiram Prajapati was also shot dead.

In the case, a total of twenty-two people, mostly officers of the Gujarat and Rajasthan police, were on trial for killing Shaikh. The prosecution examined 210 witnesses, of which 92 turned hostile.

The Central Bureau of Investigation which took over the case in 2010, had filed a case against 38 people, including then Gujarat home minister (and now Union Home Minister Amit Shah) and senior Gujarat and Rajasthan police officials.

However, a special court in Mumbai, where the case was shifted from Gujarat following a Supreme Court order in 2013, had discharged 16 of them, including Amit Shah and senior police officers like Gujarat police chief PC Pande and anti-terror squad chief DG Vanzara.

Ishrat Jahan Case:

Ishrat, a 19-year-old girl of Mumbai, and three others - Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjadali Akbarali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were killed in an alleged encounter with the police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.

It was claimed by the Gujarat Police, that the four had terror links and had conspired to kill the then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.

What made it controversial was the death of Gopinath Pillai, was one of the petitioners in Ishrat Jahan encounter case who died in a car accident in Cherthala area of Kerala's Alappuzha district. Pillai, who believed that his son was innocent, fought lengthy legal battles to bring justice to the victims of the alleged fake encounter.
