On the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that ST government residential schools in the state will be renamed as Maharishi Valmiki Residential Schools. Additionally, Raichur University will be renamed Maharishi Valmiki University. The announcement was made as part of celebrations honouring Maharishi Valmiki, the revered sage and author of the Indian epic, the Ramayana.
The decision to rename these institutions pays tribute to Valmiki's immense contributions to Indian literature and culture.
"All government residential schools in Karnataka will be renamed as Maharishi Valmiki Residential Schools. Raichur University will be renamed as Maharishi Valmiki University, " said Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah.
Further, Siddaramaiah said that it was his wish that the name and life of Valmiki who reached the pinnacle of achievement through perseverance should be immortalized.
Siddaramaiah called on marginalized communities to unite and find the courage to speak the truth. “Don’t believe my words blindly. Think, reflect, and discern between truth and lies. That will be the real way to honor Maharshi Valmiki,” he said, as per PTI.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his reverence for the sage, emphasizing Valmiki’s role in shaping moral values through his works.
Valmiki Jayanti, observed on October 17, 2024, commemorates the sage who authored the Ramayana, a text that narrates the story of Lord Rama, Sita, and Hanuman. The day is marked with prayers, recitation of verses from the Ramayana, and reflections on the timeless teachings of the epic, which emphasize virtue, justice, and righteousness.
