The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, has recommended the name of the second senior most judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, as the next Chief Justice of India.
The Chief Justice is set to retire on November 10. Justice Sanjiv Khanna will take oath as the next Chief Justice of India on November 11.
Following the convention, CJI DY Chandrachud has recommended the name of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, as the next Chief Justice of India to the Centre.
CJI DY Chandrachud has officially written to the Centre proposing Justice Khanna's name.
If the Centre accepts CJI Chandrachud's recommendation, Justice Khanna will be the 51st Chief Justice of India.
As CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna will have a term of nearly seven months till May 13, 2025, when he retires. CJI Chandrachud will retire after serving for nearly two years as the Chief Justice.
Who Is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?
On January 18, 2019, Justice Khanna was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court.
Born on 14th May, 1960, Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983 and practiced at the district courts at the Tis Hazari complex. He has also practised in the Delhi High Court and tribunals as a lawyer. He has practiced in various fields as diverse as constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration, commercial law, company law, land law, environmental law and medical negligence.
He had long tenure as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department. In 2004, he was appointed as the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He had also appeared and argued in a number of criminal cases at the Delhi High Court as anAdditional Public Prosecutor and as an amicus curie.
Justice Khanna was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was made a permanent judge in 2006. As a judge of the Delhi High Court, he held the position of Chairman/Judge-in-charge, Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre and the District Court Mediation Centres.
As a Supreme Court judge, he has held the post of Chairman, Supreme Court Legal Service Committee, from 17th June 2023 till 25th December 2023. He is presently the Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority and a member of the Governing Counsel of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.
