New Delhi:  Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday came face-to-face in the State Legislative Assembly during oath-taking of newly-elected legislators.

In the video, both leaders smiled at each other and shook hands before moving ahead.

Yogi Adityanath and Akhilesh Yadav routinely exchanged barbs during the campaigning phase of the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh election where BJP stormed back to victory.

While Akhilesh mocked UP Chief Minister calling him "baba mukhyamantri", BJP used "parivarvaadi" jibes to attack Akhilesh-led Samajwadi Party.

Newly-elected members of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly are taking oath today.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was administered oath first being Leader of the House. Leader of Opposition Akhilesh Yadav was also sworn in as MLA.

After taking oath, Akhilesh Yadav said that the opposition will work in a positive manner to fix accountability of the current government.

Notably, he was on unanimously elected as Leader of the SP Legislature Party and the Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at the party's headquarters on Saturday which was attended by all the newly-elected MLAs and party members in the legislative council.

Akhilesh Yadav resigned as MP to take up the role in the state, after having won from the Karhal Assembly seat.

The Samajwadi Party had won five Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 general elections. The party won 111 seats in assembly polls in the results declared earlier this month.

The BJP returned to power in the state winning over 250 seats.
