Rane was arrested from the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra in the afternoon on August 24 for allegedly making objectionable remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Rane had claimed that in his Independence Day address, Thackeray forgot how many years have passed since the country's independence. He had said, “If I was there, I would have given him a tight slap".

Rane was produced before a court in Mahad in Raigad district on the night of August 24. The police had sought seven days custody of Rane, which the court refused and sent him to judicial custody till September 4.

Thereafter, Rane's lawyers filed a bail application. After hearing the bail plea, the court granted bail to Rane on a surety of Rs 15,000 and directed him to appear in the office of Superintendent of Police Alibaug (Raigad) on August 30 and September 13. Also said that if the police want to take a sample of Rane's voice, then it will inform them and Rane will cooperate.

A case has been registered against Rane in Mahad under sections 189 (threatening to cause harm to public servant) and 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of the peace) and 505 (statement relating to mischief in public) of the IPC.
