Ukraine Returned Students Congregate At Delhi's Jantar Mantar, Seeks Admission To Indian Institutes

The bulk of Indian students who were compelled to flee Ukraine owing to Russia's escalating invasion of the nation was enrolled in the MBBS programme.

New Delhi: Students who returned from Ukraine on Sunday gathered with their parents at Delhi's Jantar Mantar to seek admission to Indian educational institutions for their remaining studies, news agency ANI reported.

The bulk of Indian students who were compelled to flee Ukraine owing to Russia's escalating invasion of the nation was enrolled in the MBBS programme.

“Government should save our children’s careers the way they saved their lives and brought them back from Ukraine,” parents were quoted by ANI on its official Twitter handle.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to assist students who had returned to Bengal from war-torn Ukraine.

She requested the prime minister in the letter to guarantee that these students may enrol in Indian universities and finish their medical studies.

“Till date, 391 such students from West Bengal have returned and they are passing through severe stress and anxiety due to their uncertain future,” Banerjee wrote in the letter.

In her letter, the Bengal Chief Minister also asked the Prime Minister to loosen the guidelines and made four proposals for the government to consider.

Previously, the Supreme Court dismissed two cases after the Centre said that it had finished the monumental task of evacuating 22,500 trapped Indian students from Ukraine's conflict zone, news agency PTI reported.

A bench comprising of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Krishna Murari took note of Attorney General K K Venugopal's remarks that the Centre, in addition to bringing stranded students back, is also looking into the claim on their studies are being harmed by the ongoing conflict.

As pupils returned, nothing remained in this regard, the bench noticed at the beginning.

Vishal Tiwari, a lawyer who filed a PIL in his own capacity, addressed the problem of individuals rescued from the war-torn countries continuing their education.

“A mammoth job has been done by the government and 22,500 students have been brought back. The government is looking into the representation (of students) and the government will look into it,” Venugopal said.
