Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Saturday emphasised former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray's advice on Opposition unity while raising suspicion on the 2024 Lok Sabha election as being "final" polls if the ruling NDA continues for a third consecutive term. He said that to protect democracy, opposition parties have to stay united and fight the election. The remarks come after Opposition parties held a key unity meeting in Patna the previous day which was attended by Uddhav Thackeray, his son, Aaditya Thackeray, and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut.

"Uddhav Thackeray has said in the meeting that, if there is no power change in 2024, this will be the last election. So to protect democracy, we (opposition parties) have to stay united and fight the election keeping aside politics and political ambition," Raut told news agency ANI.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) made similar remarks on Friday ahead of the meeting of Opposition parties in Patna, saying that if democracy has to survive after 2024, then political parties will have to show a big heart in the national interest to instill confidence among voters.

In an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana', the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and K Chandrasekhar Roa-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have national ambitions, but this will help Prime Minister Narendra Modi indirectly and support dictatorship, news agency PTI reported.

Both these parties are in direct contest with the Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in different states.

If democracy has to survive after 2024, then political leaders have to show a big heart for the national interest. If all come together, then it will instill confidence among voters, it said.
