Tripura Civic Body Elections Updates: In Tripura, counting of votes for more than 200 seats of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and other civic bodies is underway. The counting began at 8 a.m. Counting of votes for Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and City Council and Nagar Panchayat of 19 other municipal bodies has also started and with this counting, the fate of a total of 785 candidates is going to be decided in Tripura civic body elections today. This time the main competition is between BJP, TMC and CPI(M).
There have been allegations of rigging municipal elections in the state and attacking political rivals. A State Election Commission official said counting of votes is underway at 13 polling stations in all the eight districts of Tripura where three levels of security arrangements have been put in place.
Out of 20 urban local bodies, elections were held in 13 urban local bodies including Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). BJP candidates have been declared winners in 22 out of 51 wards of Agartala Municipal Corporation. The 15-seat BJP has won the Khowai Municipal Council.
BJP candidates won all 13 seats in Melaghar Municipal Council. BJP won all 13 seats in Sonamura Nagar Panchayat. In Kailashahar, BJP won 16 seats and CPIM won one seat. In Beloonia, BJP candidates declared 16 out of 17 seats victorious. BJP candidates won all 9 seats in Sabroom Nagar Panchayat. BJP candidates won all 15 seats in Kumarghat Municipal Council. BJP won all the 15 seats in Teliamura.
In Ambassa, BJP won 12 seats, while TMC, CPI (M) and TIPRA Motha won one seat each. In Amarpur, BJP won all 13 seats. In Panisagar, BJP won 12 seats and CPIM won one seat. BJP candidate won the only seat of Jirania Nagar Panchayat.
Ruling BJP, Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) face off
Ruling BJP, Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) are facing each other in the electoral battle. The Trinamool Congress wants to establish itself in the North-East and elsewhere to establish itself as a national party, while the BJP has removed CPI(M) from power in the state a few years ago. The Trinamool, which has accused the polls of rigging and intimidation, has demanded the cancellation of the entire election, while the CPI(M) demanded fresh elections in five municipal bodies, including the AMC. Both parties claimed that BJP supporters attacked political rivals and rigged the elections, but the government remained a mute spectator. However, BJP has categorically rejected the allegations. Out of a total of over 4.93 lakh voters, 81.54 per cent exercised their right in the election.
