Three persons in Bihar's Sitamarhi district died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, while one was admitted to a hospital. The local police, based on a tip-off reached the hospital in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday but one of the person had died, said the police. Investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of their death.


"Acting on a tip-off that two persons were undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Sitamarhi after drinking spurious liquor, police reached the spot in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. However, by the time they arrived at the hospital, one person identified as Awadesh Kumar had died. The exact cause of death can only be ascertained after post-mortem," police said in a statement, as reported by news agency PTI.


"Another person identified as Roshan Rai is undergoing treatment at the hospital and cops are in touch with his family members", the police further said in its statement.

While investigating the case, the police came to know from locals that two more persons had died in the area after consuming spurious liquor.


"Villagers informed police about the death of two more persons in the area. However, their bodies were cremated without informing police," the statement added.


Three persons identified as Raj Nadan Sahni, Surya Pratap Sahni and Shatrughan Sahni have been arrested by the police in the incident so far. Around 90 bottles of liquor were also recovered from their possession, according to the police.


The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar had banned sale and consumption of alcohol in the state in April 2016. However, incidents of smuggling of liquor continue to be reported in the state.


In April this year, more than 30 people had died after consuming spurious liquor in East Champaran district.
