The 6 female petitioners who dared to raise voice against Triple Talaq in court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday banned the practice of Triple Talaq for six months stating it as 'unconstitutional'

New Delhi: The Supreme Court pronounced its judgment on the Triple Talaq issue on Tuesday at 10:30am and upheld Triple Talaq, imposing an interim ban on the same for 6 months. The court also asked the parliament to come out with law on the same, The judgment comes after petitions were filed by several women in court in the month of May; which stated the matter as “unconstitutional” and “unlawful”. Who are the petitioners? Shayara Bano: The first petitioner in the case is 36-year-old Shayara Bano, whose husband divorced her after 15-years of getting married by pronouncing Triple Talaq. Bano is suffering through several ailments post multiple abortions. Her fight began when her husband divorced her while she was staying with her parents in Uttarakhand. Ishrat Jahan: 30-year-old Ishrat Jahan is yet another victim of Triple Talaq, whose husband left her and took away her four children, by giving her a Talaq over phone, leaving her at the mercy of her relatives In Howrah. Jahan also fought back against her husband to prevent his second marriage. Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan: A third petition was filed by Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA), which was titled as ‘Muslim Women’s Quest For Equality’. As per an argument by BMMA in court, “Allah says men and women are equal”. The argument stated that the constitution of India gives equal rights to men and women. Besides these three petitioners, three more petitioners named Gulshan Parween, Aafreen Rehman and Atiya Sabri stood against Triple Talaq in court. The women were present in the court on the judgment day.
