Sonbhadra Case: Adamant Priyanka Gandhi Spends Night In Guest House After Being Detained By UP Police

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi was on Friday detained by Uttar Pradesh police while she was on her way to Sonbhadra to meet the families of victims who were shot dead in a land dispute case.

New Delhi:  Congress General Secretary (East UP) Priyanka Gandhi remained adamant on her will to reach Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh and therefore spent last night in a guest house, after being detained released by Uttar Pradesh police. Speaking to ABP News, she said “I won’t leave without meeting the victims”. Congress leader was detained and stopped from going to Sonbhadra where 10 people were gunned down this week, triggering a standoff with the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh. Refusing to furnish a personal bond, Gandhi stayed put at a guesthouse in Mirzapur district where she was taken after she squatted on the road with her supporters, insisting that she be allowed to proceed and meet the victims' families. Priyanka also tweeted about the incident and said that she is ready to go to jail if she is not allowed to go ahead. Speaking on the entire episode, Deputy Inspector General Piyush Kumar Srivastava said “The district magistrate and the superintendent of police were talking with her at the guesthouse in Chunar to persuade her against travelling ahead”. The Sub divisional magistrate of Chunar Satya Prakash said that Priyanka Gandhi was under preventive detention and had refused to furnish a personal bond. However,  on Twitter, she claimed that she had been under arrest for the past nine hours and has been told by the administration that she will be sent to jail for 14 days if she doesn't furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000. Slamming the government for Priyanka’s ‘arrest’, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi termed the police action as ‘illegal arrest’ As Congress leaders came out in Gandhi's support and party workers held protests against the UP government, Trinamool Congress announced in New Delhi that it too planned to send a delegation to Sonbhadra on Saturday.
