New Delhi: Union minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani on Wednesday slammed a Twitter user after being questioned about her gotra on social media. She got furious when a Twitter user questioned her religion, belief, and faith is "Hindustan". He even questioned her on wearing 'sindoor'. To which the minister replied that her Gotra was the same as her father – Kaushal, however, her husband and children don’t have a gotra because they are Zoroastrian. She further said, "The sindoor I wear is my belief as a practising Hindu. Now get back to your life." She also later posted a disclaimer in which she said that being a public figure it is her responsibility to respond the questions she is been asked.

This comes amid a fiery debate fuelled by reports on Rahul Gandhi's gotra. A priest in Rajasthan had claimed that the Congress president Rahul's gotra was 'Dattatreya' and he is a Kashmiri Brahmin. "His gotra is 'Dattatreya' and he is a Kashmiri Brahmin. Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Maneka Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi have come and offered prayers at the ghat and it is recorded with us," Dinanath Kaul, the priest, told reporters. The priest also presented documents showing the names of Rahul Gandhi's ancestors who have worshipped at the Pushkar lake.

It all started when Rahul Gandhi went to pray at the famous Pushkar temple in Rajasthan during his campaigning on Monday and said that he belongs to the Dattatreya gotra. The Congress chief had visited the Ajmer dargah and Pushkar and offered prayers before addressing election rallies.
