Union Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday fell ill on stage while attending a programme in Siliguri's Dagapur ground. His sugar levels dropped while he was on stage and was brought down from the stage immediately. He was administered saline.


West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee asked the Commissioner of Police to take care of the situation. As per instructions, the union minister was taken out from the venue. According to sources, Gadkari was headed to BJP leader and Darjeeling MP Raju Bista's residence, who was in attendance, to rest.


Gadkari was in Siliguri to lay the foundation stone for three national highway projects of Rs 1206 crore in north Bengal.


After Nitin Gadkari fell ill he was attended by doctors, BJP MLA Neeraj Zimba told the news agency PTI. Gadkari later recovered and left in his car, the BJP MLA said.


“After the programme ended, Gadkari ji complained of uneasiness. The doctors immediately attended to him in the backstage area. He later left in his car,” Zimba told PTI.


On Thursday, Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone of a long road from Shiv Mandir in Siliguri to Sevak's Cantonment. 


The Union Transport and Highways Minister shared pictures from the launch event, where he was seen greeting the crowd from the stage, and tweeted: "Inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 3 NH projects worth Rs. 1206 Crore in Siliguri today."
