New Delhi: Covid-19 vaccine Covovax is available for everyone above the age of 12 years, CEO of Serum Institute of India's (SII) Adar Poonawalla said on Wednesday. Earlier, on Tuesday, Poonawalla had said that children aged 12 to 17 years in India can now get SII’s Covovax and hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision in providing another vaccine for children.
Taking to his Twitter handle, Poonawalla said, “A lot of you have asked if Covovax is available for adults. The answer is yes, it is available for everyone above the age of 12.”
Earlier, he had tweeted, “Covovax (@Novavax) is now available for children in India. This is the only vaccine manufactured in India that is also sold in Europe and has an efficacy of > 90%. This is in line with Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision of providing yet another vaccine to protect our children.”
It is to be noted that the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) on Friday had approved Serum Institute of India's Covid-19 vaccine Covovax for the 12-17 year age group, sources close to news agency IANS said.
India's drug regulator, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had approved the vaccine for the restricted use in emergency situations in adults on December 28 last year and in the 12-17 age group with certain conditions on March 9.
Covovax is the second Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by the SII, which makes the Covishield vaccine, the dose that is most widely used in the country.
