NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is responding well to treatment and his health has shown significant improvement in the last 48 hours, the AIIMS has said on Wednesday.

"Vajpayee had come with kidney tract infection, chest congestion and his urine output was on the lower side when he was admitted, AIIMS director Randeep Guleria told the media here.

As his urine output was low, a slow dialysis was done, he added.

"He has shown significant improvement with treatment. His kidney function has improved with good urine output. His blood pressure, heart rate and breathing are normal," he said.

"We are hopeful of Vajpayee's full recovery in the next few days," he said.

Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS on Monday. His hospitalisation triggered VIP visits including that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat visited the ailing leader on Tuesday.
