New Delhi: Congress leader and the party’s former Punjab state president Navjot Singh Sidhu, sentenced by the Supreme Court to a one-year jail term in connection with a 1988 road rage case, will have a doctor-recommended diet, including coconut water, lactose-free milk, a glass of juice and a few almonds, an official said. According to a report by news agency PTI, after a medical test on May 23, a board of doctors suggested the special diet for Sidhu.

The special diet of the 58-year-old cricketer-turned-politician comprises a cup of rosemary tea or a glass of coconut water in early morning followed by one cup of lactose-free milk, a tablespoon of flax/sunflower/melon/chia seeds, five-six almonds, one walnut and two pecan nuts in the breakfast.

In his mid-morning meal, Sidhu will be having a glass of juice (beetroot, cucumber, tulsi leaves, Amla, carrot) or any of fruits such as watermelon, melon, kiwi, guava, or sprouted black chana, green gram with cucumber/tomato/half lemon/avocado.

For his lunch, doctors recommended one bowl of cucumber, seasonal green vegetables along with a chapati of sorghum, singhara or ragi flours.

For his evening meal, Sidhu has been recommended a cup of tea with low-fat milk, and 25 grams of paneer slice or tofu with half a lemon, and for dinner, he will have mix vegetables and dal soup or black chana soup with a bowl of sauteed green vegetables.

At bedtime, he has been recommended a cup of chamomile tea and one tablespoon of psyllium husk, with half glass of warm water.

It is to be noted that the Congress leader suffers from medical conditions like embolism and also has a liver ailment. He had also undergone treatment for acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) at a hospital in Delhi in 2015.

Sidhu has been appointed as 'munshi' (assistant) to do clerical work in the jail, an official said, adding that he will perform the job from his barrack due to security reasons.

As per the jail manual, prisoners are categorised as unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled. Unskilled and semi-skilled prisoners get a daily wage of Rs 40 and Rs 50 respectively, while the skilled prisoners get Rs 60 per day.

Notably, Sidhu was sentenced to a year in prison in the 34-year-old road rage case that resulted in the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh.
