Sanjeev 'Jeeva' Murder: Gangster's Wife Moves SC, Seeks Interim Relief And Permission To Attend Last Rites

Wife of Sanjeev Maheshwari Jeeva, who was shot dead on June 7 in a Lucknow court, has moved to the SC seeking interim relief for protection and permission to attend last rites rituals of her husband.

Wife of jailed gangster Sanjeev Maheshwari Jeeva, an aide of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who was shot dead on June 7 in a Lucknow court has moved to the Supreme Court seeking interim relief for protection and permission to attend last rites rituals of her husband. State of Uttar Pradesh tells Supreme Court that it has no objection if she attends the funeral.  Supreme Court has posted the matter for hearing on Friday.

According to ABP News sources, the State of Uttar Pradesh has said that the last rites of Sanjeev Jeeva will not be held today. UP government's lawyer Garima Prasad said that they have no objection to Jeeva's wife attending the last rites. Gangster's body can be taken to Muzaffarnagar, sources said. However, State of Uttar Pradesh also said that no other relief should be given to her. The apex court has asked Jeeva's wife to file additional affidavit in the case today. The case will be heard tomorrow in the Supreme Court.

State of UP opposed granting protection from arrest to Jeeva's wife Payal Maheshwari in pending cases saying that the matter pertaining to  Gangster Act should be argued in the lower court.

Gangster Sanjeev Maheshwari, alias Jeeva, was fatally shot on the Lucknow Civil Court premises in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. Jeeva, who was incarcerated in Lucknow Jail, had been brought to the court for a hearing when he was shot dead. The attacker had disguised himself as an advocate. Two others, including a minor girl, were also injured in the attack on  Sanjeev Maheshwari 'Jeeva'.

Jeeva was shot dead from a close range on the Lucknow Civil Court premises by a man posing as a lawyer. The assailant fired at least six rounds. The assailant was arrested soon after the attack. The suspect has been identified as Vijay Yadav, a resident of Jaunpur.

A constable, named Laal Mohammad, and a child, named Lakshmi, were injured in the attack, said sources. Lucknow Police said that the injured have been shifted to a trauma centre for treatment.

The incident sparked a spontaneous protest by lawyers, who said they were concerned about their own safety. A lawyer told ABP News: "People are being murdered in police custody. There is clear involvement of top administrative officials in such incidents. There should be a detailed inquiry." Another lawyer said: "Today, a child of 4-5 years was injured in the attack. There is complete failure of law and order. What can we expect from the police if people are being murdered inside the court?"

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder. The SIT will consist of three members: ADG Technical Mohit Agarwal, IPS Nilabja Chowdhary, and Ayodhya IG Praveen Kumar. The Chief Minister has instructed the team to complete the investigation within one week. UP deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya said: "Murderers will not be spared in UP... The criminal will be punished according to the law."
