The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned a plea by the West Bengal government challenging the Calcutta High Court order directing a CBI probe into allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.
The plea was heard by a bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta.
Appearing for the state government, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "I have instructions to request that it be called after a few weeks. There is some important information...this information may be relevant." He sought an adjournment of the matter for one week, the Live Law reported.
Justice Gavai told Singhvi to file a contempt petition before the High Court.
The court has adjourned the plea after the vacation adding that it had recorded Singhvi's statement that the pendency of the petition would not be used for any purpose.
In its plea, the state government said that the high court's April 10 order demoralised the entire state machinery, including the police force.
The state government's plea stated, that the high court order that directed the state to provide the required support to the CBI without any guidelines, amounts to usurping the powers of the state police to investigate any cognisable offence in the Sandeshkhali area, even if the same is not related to the allegations levelled by the PIL petitioners.
The Central Bureau of Investigation is already probing the case of attack on Enforcement Directorate officials in Sandeshkhali on January 5 and has registered three FIR's in connection with the matter.
The high court had directed the CBI to investigate the allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali and submit a comprehensive report to it on the next date of hearing.
The Calcutta High Court directed that the matter will be heard again on May 2, the date on which CBI is asked to file the report.
