New Delhi: A massive setback was suffered by Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal on Tuesday, as five of the party’s Members of Legislative Council (MLC) switched allegiance and joined friend-turned-foe Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United. This comes months ahead of the elections to the legislative assembly of the state, which is scheduled to take place in the month of October-November. In another blow to the party, its National Vice President Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has announced his resignation from his post. Sources reveal that though he hasn’t yet submitted his resignation, he is seemingly upset at roping in of former MP Rama Singh in the party. The 74-year-old Senior party leader and former Union Minister was found to be Corona positive last week. He was admitted to AIIMS on the complaint of fever and cough.

The RJD, which had 8 MLCs, is now left with only three MLCs.  The defecting MLCs are Radha Charan Shah, Sanjay Prasad, Dilip Rai, Md Kamar Alam, and Ranvijay Kumar Singh.  Now Rabri Devi, Ramchandra Purve and Subodh Rai are left in the council.

On Monday a large number of disgruntled party leaders created a ruckus in front of the residence Rabri Devi, demanding ticket for legislative council elections in Bihar for a veteran leader.

Biennial elections to the Upper House, for nine seats falling under the Vidhan Sabha constituency, are underway and the RJD has announced that it will be fielding three candidates whose names would be made public upon approval from Lalu Yadav.
