Reservation for General Category: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has opposed the upper caste reservation bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Calling the bill an insult to Baba Sahib Bhim Rao Ambedkar, AIMIM chief said that it shall never be passed under the court of law. "This bill is a fraud on the constitution and an insult to Ambedkar. The purpose of the reservation was to give social justice and remove social and educational backwardness. The constitution does not recognise economically weaker section," Owaisi has said. "Have the savarnas ever faced untouchability?" he questioned, "There is no empirical data to show the savarna people are backward," he further added. "This bill will not be passed under the court of law, today, you can enjoy your Diwali or whatever," Owaisi said in the lower house today.
The constitutional amendment bill to provide 10%t reservation in jobs and educational institutions for economically weaker sections in the general category has been tabled in the Lok Sabha today and discussions are underway in the lower house. While the winter session of Lok Sabha ends today, the government has extended the Rajya Sabha session till Wednesday to push the passage of the reservation bill, as per the report.
In a major move ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Union Cabinet on Monday cleared a 10 percent job and education quota for "economically weaker" sections, meeting a key demand of upper castes, a staunch BJP support base which has shown signs of a drift from the party. The government today introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha for the quota.
The bill was brought in on the last day of the Winter Session of the Lok Sabha and Union Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot introduced it in the House amid protests by the Samajwadi Party.
