Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday evening went vegetable shopping in Ladakh's Leh main market area after biking across the Union territory earlier in the day as photos showed him meeting locals. In a video shared by news agency ANI, the former Congress president was seen surrounded by a crowd as he spoke to a vegetable vendor. He bought some vegetables and even gave some away to two people in his entourage as well as a supporter who could be heard saying, "I want one".

Rahul Gandhi also met and interacted with locals who were seen enthusiastically asking the Congress leader for a selfie. His supporters could be heard raising slogans of "Rahul Gandhi Zindabad".

The videos come as Rahul biked across Ladakh on Day 3 of his trip after having covered Leh to Pangong Lake on his motorbike on the eve of his father Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary on Saturday.

This is Rahul Gandhi's first Ladakh tour after the region was carved out of Jammu and Kashmir and made a Union territory in August 2019. The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was also turned into a Union territory while its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution was revoked.

Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Kargil this week as he extended his stay in the region by four more days to cover Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, and Kargil district, Congress spokesperson and leader of opposition in Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Tsering Namgyal told news agency PTI on phone.

The Congress spokesperson said that in Ladakh he is likely to interact with party workers and people, especially the youth, there.

Rahul Gandhi's visit assumes significance as LAHDC, Kargil is set to go to polls on September 10. The National Conference and the Congress have announced a pre-poll alliance for the hill council elections.
