Dehradun: Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Pushkar Singh Dhami was on Saturday chosen as the 11th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and his swearing-in ceremony will be held tomorrow, i.e. Sunday at 5 PM.

He was chosen to lead the state in the legislative party meeting chaired by Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar wherein other BJP leaders also took part.

"During the Legislature Party meeting, it was decided to appoint Pushkar Dhami as Uttarakhand BJP legislature party leader. We went to the Governor to discuss party's decision. Oath taking ceremony to be held tomorrow," Union Minister and BJP leader Narendra Singh Tomar informed.

Dhami will take oath as Chief Minister at 5 PM tomorrow.

In this regard, BJP leaders met Governor Baby Rani Maurya at her residence in Dehradun this evening.

Speaking to the media after the BJP legislature meeting, Pushkar Singh Dhami said: "My party has appointed a common worker, son of an ex-serviceman, who was born in Pithoragarh to serve the state. We'll work together for people's welfare. We accept the challenge of serving people with the help of others in a short time span".

Pushkar Singh Dhami is a member of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly from the Khatima constituency in the Udham Singh Nagar district. He has been elected as the Khatima constituency MLA twice.

Earlier, his name was racing ahead among the candidates being considered for the top post.

Interestingly, Pushkar Singh Dhami has never held a ministerial post in the Uttarakhand cabinet. He will become the state Chief Minister without ever having been a state cabinet minister.

Dhami is said to have proved his dedication to the party with his work as the BJP state Youth Wing head.

Uttarakhand had undergone another sudden political upheaval barely four months after Tirath Rawat took over as Chief Minister replacing Trivendra Singh Rawat who had to resign before the BJP government in the state completed 4 years in governance.

Tirath Singh Rawat on Friday resigned from the post citing constitutional compulsion as byelections could not be held in the state due to COVID-19.

"I have submitted my resignation to Governor. Given the constitutional crisis, I felt it was right for me to resign. I am thankful to the central leadership and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for every opportunity they have given to me so far," he said elaborating the reason.
