New Delhi: Bhupinder Singh Honey, nephew of Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, was sent to 14-day judicial custody by a Jalandhar court in the illegal sand mining case on Friday.
On February 3, Honey was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Jalandhar in the 2018 illegal sand mining case. The ED raided the houses and offices of Honey and his associates in connection with the case in January this year.
During the raid, the ED had recovered cash worth Rs 10 crore, jewellery worth Rs 21 lakh, and a Rolex watch.
ED had arrested Bhupinder Singh on the intervening night of February 3-4. After this, he was remanded in ED custody till February 8 and again till February 11, as per court orders.
The Congress has called the ED's action politically motivated. "We have no objections, the law is doing its work," Punjab CM Channi had said.
During the interrogation, the ED asked many questions to Honey. Harneet Singh Oberoi, the counsel of Honey, was allowed to meet him on alternate days.
According to ED officials, Bhupinder has confessed that the cash worth Rs 10 crore belonged to him. The ED has alleged that Bhupinder Singh was also getting money from illegal mining.
According to reports, probe agencies have shared information with the Income Tax department regarding his property details. The I-T department is also mulling lodging a case against Honey.
