New Delhi: Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government withdrew the security cover provided to as many as 424 people in the state. According to a report by news agency ANI on Saturday, those whose security cover has been withdrawn include many retired police officers, religious leaders, and political figures.
Earlier in April, the Punjab government had withdrawn security cover of 184 people including former ministers and ex-MLAs, and other leaders. What is noteworthy here is that the security covers of former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, Captain Amarinder Singh’s son Raninder Singh and the wife of Congress MLA Partap Singh Bajwawere were also withdrawn last month.
According to a report by NDTV, the removal of security led to the return of 400 police personnel to the police stations.

Bhagwant Mann said the about same that the government will utilise police for what they are meant to do (work for common people) and not bother them (with security duties of VIPs).
Mann had also announced that he will put an end to the practice of MLAs drawing pensions for more than one term.
"Thousands of crores of rupees which were being spent on MLA pensions will now be used to benefit the people of Punjab," the Chief Minister had said while announcing the pension rule change, NDTV reported.
However, he was asked by the state governor to table the bill in the assembly in the Budget Session.
