Prophet Remarks Case: Nupur Sharma To Record Statement Today? Lawyer Seeks Time From Thane Police

Bhiwandi city police in Thane district summoned suspended Nupur Sharma and asked her to appear for inquiry on June 13.

New Delhi: Suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma has been summoned to appear before Bhiwandi city police in Thane district on Monday for inquiry into a matter pertaining to her controversial statement regarding the Prophet Muhammad. Recently, the row over the comments by the suspended BJP spokesperson intensified, leading to global outrage. In response to this, the party issued a statement emphasising its stance on the matter. Mumbai police also summoned Nupur to appear at Pydhonie police station on June 25 regarding the case.

As per news agency ANI, Bhiwandi city police in Thane district summoned suspended Nupur Sharma and asked her to appear for inquiry on June 13. While responding to the summon sent by the Bhiwandi police, her lawyer sent mail to the police seeking a few more days for her to appear for the inquiry.

Protests erupted in several states after Friday prayers including Punjab, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh over the controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad made by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal.

While Nupur Sharma made comments during a TV debate, another BJP leader Naveen Jindal posted a controversial remark on Twitter. The BJP suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled media in-charge, Naveen Jindal, over the remarks as several countries condemned the statements.

Notably, a procession was taken out on Saturday evening in support of Nupur Sharma despite prohibitory orders being in place. A case was registered at the Gopiganj police station after the procession, news agency PTI reported an official as informing. Those who took part in the procession told reporters that the entire Hindu society was supporting Nupur and the BJP needed to respect her.

As the controversy gained international attention, India reiterated that the controversial remarks concerning Prophet Mohammad do not reflect the views of the Government and added that action has been taken by concerned quarters against those who made the comment.
