New Delhi: Priyanka Gandhi has called Congress leaders in Uttar Pradesh for a meeting to discuss the law and order situation in the state. Gandhi who is also General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) will be addressing the leaders virtually during the meeting.

The move comes after 8 police officers lot their lives during a violent face-off with criminals on Friday. A report by ANI says that the advisory group, CLP leader, PCC president will be part of the meeting to discuss the situation. The part state unit has also asked to keep lit candles outside their homes to pay homage to the martyred policemen. Gandhi had also tweeted about the incident and in her post had written that 'law and order situation in UP has deteriorated. Criminals without fear in the state. Not just the common man even the police are not safe.'


According to reports, the police were ambushed when a team had gone to raid an area in search of a notorious gangster Vikas Dubey. The raid was carried out at around 1 am on July 2-3 in Bithoor area in Chaubepur in Kanpur. Dubey is a gangster from Uttar Pradesh who is a history-sheeter and is facing up to 60 criminal cases. He resides in Dikru village and according to media reports also has a private army. He is also the prime accused of the murder of the BJP leader Santosh Shukla in 2001.

On Friday as the police party reached the Bikru village under Kanpur Dehat's Shivli Police Station area to make the arrest, at least eight to ten criminals opened indiscriminate fire from the rooftops. Shivrajpur Station Officer Mahesh Yadav, a sub-inspector and five constables were the others killed in the attack.
