New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu as she won the presidential election to become the first tribal woman set to occupy India's top constitutional post. "Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji's life, her early struggles, her rich service and her exemplary success motivates each and every Indian. She has emerged as a ray of hope for our citizens, especially the poor, marginalised and the downtrodden," PM said on his official Twitter handle.


In the results declared by the returning officer for the Presidential election, Rajya Sabha Secretary General, PC Mody said the 15th president of India Droupadi Murmu secured 6,76,803 votes as opposed to Yashwant Sinha's 3,80,177 votes.


PM Modi also reached the residence of NDA's Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu for congratulating her on being elected as the country's President, as reported by news agency ANI.






"Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has been an outstanding MLA and Minister. She had an excellent tenure as Jharkhand Governor. I am certain she will be an outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India's development journey," he added.


PM also thanked MPs and MLAs across party lines who have supported the candidature of Murmu.


"I would like to thank all those MPs and MLAs across party lines who have supported the candidature of Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji. Her record victory augurs well for our democracy," said PM.














Meanwhile, Yashwant Sinha, the joint candidate of the opposition, also extended his wishes to Murmu saying, "I heartily congratulate Droupadi Murmu on her victory in Presidential Election 2022. I hope—indeed, every Indian hopes—that as 15th President she functions as Custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour. I join fellow countrymen in extending best wishes to her."

The name of Draupadi Murmu was announced by the BJP after the announcement of opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. Even after this, many of the opposition parties supported name of Murmu. Many such parties, including BJD, YSR Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Akali Dal, Shiv Sena, Telugu Desam Party, supported Draupadi Murmu, who are not part of the NDA.
