‘Poor Should Get Free Treatment In Best Hospital’: PM Modi Dedicates 7 Cancer Hospitals To Nation

The event was also attended by businessman and philanthropist Ratan Tata who unveiled the hospitals with PM Modi.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday dedicated seven cancer hospitals and laid foundation stones for other seven cancer hospitals to the nation in Khanikur in Dibrugarh, Assam. The inauguration took place during PM Modi’s visit to Assam where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several development projects.

Post the inauguration ceremony, he addressed the crowd and said, he is honoured to participate in the celebration of the state.

He also added that it is the effort of his government that the poor should get free treatment in the best hospitals. He added that schemes like Ayushman Bharat provide free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh to the patients.

He then went on to list the seven focuses (Swasthya ke Saptrishi) of his government on providing the best healthcare to the citizens.

  • The first attempt is that there is no chance of illness. That's why our government has given a lot of emphasis on Preventive Healthcare. These yoga and fitness-related programs are going on because of this.
  • If the disease occurs, it should be known in the beginning. For this, lakhs of new testing centers are being built across the country.
  • People should have better first aid facilities near their homes. Primary health centers are being improved for this.
  • The poor should get free treatment in the best hospital. For this, under schemes like Ayushman Bharat, free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh is being given by the Government of India.
  • To minimize the dependence on big cities for good treatment. For this, our government is making unprecedented investments in health infrastructure
  • To address the shortfall in the number of doctors.  In the last seven years, more than 70 thousand new seats have been added for MBBS and PG. Our government has also treated more than 5 lakh AYUSH doctors at par with allopathic doctors.
  • The digitization of health services. The effort of the government is to get rid of long lines for treatment, to get rid of the problems in the name of treatment. One after the other schemes have been implemented for this.

The event was also attended by businessman and philanthropist Ratan Tata who unveiled the hospitals with PM Modi.

The central government is executing a joint project with Assam and Tata trusts as a part of Assam Cancer Care Foundation to build South Asia's largest affordable cancer care network with 17 Cancer care hospitals spread across the state.

"Under Phase 1 of the project, out of 10 hospitals, the construction of seven hospitals has been completed while three hospitals are at various levels of construction. Phase 2 of the project will witness the construction of seven new cancer hospitals,” a press release by the PMO said.

The six cancer hospitals dedicated by PM Modi to the nation are built at Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Darrang, Tezpur, Lakhimpur, and Jorhat.

The seven hospitals for which the PM laid foundation stones will be constructed under phase 2 of the project at Dhubri, Nalbari, Goalpara, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, and Golaghat.
