In the face of opposition accusations that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed to undermine the Constitution, PM Narendra Modi asserted on Friday that his government held the utmost reverence for it, suggesting that even Babasaheb Ambedkar would be unable to abolish it at present.
Speaking at an election rally in Barmer, Modi contended that the Congress aligned itself with forces deemed as anti-national and criticised the opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc for purportedly seeking to undermine the nation's strength. "The Constitution of the country is everything for the (BJP) government and even if Babasaheb Ambedkar himself comes, he cannot abolish the Constitution," Modi said, PTI reported.

The PM accused the Congress of trying to "destroy the Constitution" by imposition of an emergency in the nation. "The Congress tried to destroy the Constitution by imposing emergency in the country and now it is taking cover in the name of the Constitution to abuse Modi," he also said.
The previous month, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that the "ultimate goal of Narendra Modi and the BJP is to destroy Babasaheb's Constitution" following comments made by BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde regarding the party's need for a two-thirds majority to amend the Constitution.
The BJP dismissed Hegde's remarks as his "personal opinion" and sought clarification from him.
Dr B R Ambedkar was the key architect of the Constitution.
Without directly naming any party, Modi criticised a faction within the I.N.D.I.A bloc for advocating nuclear disarmament in its manifesto. "Should a country like India, whose neighbours on both sides have nuclear weapons, think about eliminating nuclear weapons? I want to ask the Congress, on whose instructions your I.N.D.I alliance working?" Modi added.
"What kind of alliance is this that wants to make India powerless," he questioned. Modi asserted that the Congress' ideology was anti-progress and accused former Congress governments of deliberately neglecting development in border districts.
"The Congress stands with every anti-national force. It ruled for decades but there is not a single major problem of the country for which it gave a complete solution," Modi further added. "The Congress' thinking is anti-development. The country's border districts were deliberately deprived of development by former Congress governments," he outlined.
PM Modi emphasised his administration's commitment to making India a powerful nation, people of the I.N.D.I alliance is trying to weaken the country.
