Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Olympic Bronze Medalist Manu Bhaker on Sunday, congratulating her on her remarkable achievement in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event at the Paris Olympics. Modi hailed her victory, noting its historic significance as Bhaker became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting.


In their conversation, the Prime Minister expressed his pride and excitement, saying, "Manu, hearty congratulations to you... Hearing about your success has filled me with enthusiasm and joy."


Bhaker, in response, appreciated the government's efforts, stating that they have all the necessary facilities. Modi sympathised with her for narrowly missing out on the silver medal. "Though you missed the silver by 0.1 points, you have still made the country proud," Modi remarked, praising her resilience. 


Bhaker responded positively, "Absolutely sir, there are more matches ahead, and I hope to perform well in them too."


Modi further expressed his confidence in her future performances, "I have full confidence that you will perform well in the future too. This will boost your enthusiasm and self-confidence, and the country will benefit from it."






The Prime Minister inquired about her and her teammates' well-being, to which Bhaker replied that everyone was very happy and conveyed their regards. Modi highlighted the government's efforts to provide the best possible facilities for the athletes.


"We try to give as many facilities as we can to our players. We try to provide whatever comfort is required in view of the games," PM Modi remarked.


"Your hard work will bear fruit (Aap logon ki mehnat rang lane waali hai)," he said went on to ask the Olympian if she had been able to speak to her family. He said the family would be very happy with her achievement. The Prime Minister concluded the call extending his blessings.


On social media platform X, Modi wrote, "A resilient Manu Bhaker ended India's 12-year wait for a shooting medal in the Olympics by becoming the first markswoman from the country to finish on the podium with a bronze in the 10m air pistol event of the Paris Games on Sunday. In a congratulatory call to her, Modi notes that her campaign was hurt in the Tokyo Olympics as her gun malfunctioned but now she has made up for it. A historic medal! Well done, @realmanubhaker, for winning India's FIRST medal at #ParisOlympics2024! Congrats for the Bronze." He added that her success is even more special as she becomes the first woman to win a medal in shooting for India.






Congress Lauds Manu Bhaker's Win As 'Inspiration' For Young Athletes


The Congress also lauded Bhaker's achievement. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge posted on X, "India has begun its Olympics run with a well-deserved medal! Our congratulations to Manu Bhaker on clinching the bronze medal for India in the women's 10m pistol event at Paris 2024. Your achievement is a testament to your exceptional skill and perseverance. We are extremely proud of you! May this momentous occasion inspire countless young athletes to strive for excellence."






Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi expressed his pride, saying, "Congratulations to Manu Bhaker for the Bronze - first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal. Our daughters have given us a wonderful start. Many more to come."






Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remarked, "A very historic and happy occasion for the country!
