Parliament Security Breach Case: Delhi Court Denies Bail To Neelam Azad

A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed the bail petition filed by Neelam Azad, an accused in the Parliament security breach case

A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed the bail petition filed by Neelam Azad, an accused in the Parliament security breach case.

Azad, Manoranjan D, Sagar Sharma, Lalit Jha, Amol Shinde and Mahesh Kumawat (all accused in the Parliament security breach case) were sent to judicial custody on Saturday after expiry of their police remand.

According to the news agency PTI, Additional Sessions Judge Hardeep Kaur of Patiala House Court ruled that it would not be right to grant her the relief at this stage.

On January 18, the court had reserved the order on Azad's bail application. Her application for bail claimed that Azad was not required for investigation any longer and that “no purpose will be served by keeping her in custody any longer”, according to a PTI report.

However, the police had opposed the bail application, on the grounds that the investigation was at a nascent stage and that the investigation may be hampered, hindered, obstructed by the accused if granted bail, the PTI reported.

Azad, is a 37-year-old woman. She cleared the Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test seven years ago. Azad has previously participated in protests for farmers' rights and female wrestlers.

Speaking to news agency PTI, advocate Suresh Chaudhary representing Azad said that the case is at a nascent stage and they will explore all the remedies available to them.

On December 13, 2023, the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow gas from canisters and shouted slogans before being overpowered by some MPs. Simultaneously, two other accused --Amol Shinde and Azad -- sprayed coloured gas from canisters while shouting slogans outside the Parliament.

Azad, Manoranjan D, Sagar Sharma and Amol Shinde were arrested from the spot. Jha and Kumawat were later apprehended for their alleged involvement in the incident.
