Operation Ganga: Flight Carrying Students Evacuated From Sumy Lands In Delhi

Three flights left Poland to bring back 600 students evacuated from Sumy.

New Delhi: Around 600 Students evacuated from northeastern Ukrainian city Sumy on Tuesday have started arriving in India on Friday under Operation Ganga. 

The last big group of stranded students, who were evacuated from Sumy, boarded the Air India flight from Rzeszow, Poland, around 11.30 pm (IST) on Thursday and landed in Delhi at 5.45 am on Friday, according to officials quoted in the PTI report.

Three flights had left for Poland to bring back 600 students evacuated from Sumy.

Another special flight, carrying 242 Indian citizens stranded in Ukraine, arrived in Delhi from Poland around 8.40 am.

The rescued students in the first flight are first, second and third-year students while the second flight will carry fourth and fifth-year students.

The third flight will carry those with pets including fifth and sixth-year students and any other who may have been left behind, according to students who spoke to PTI.

India is carrying out a challenging evacuation exercise under Operation Ganga to help stranded Indians leave Ukraine.

India is engaged in the evacuation of its citizens from war-torn Ukraine's neighbouring countries such as Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland as the Ukrainian airspace has been shut since February 24.

On Thursday, 119 Indians and 27 foreigners reached the Hindon airbase from the Romanian capital Bucharest, according to PTI.

These Indians and foreigners were stranded in Ukraine due to the Russian military offensive that began on February 24.

This was the 17th flight that the IAF has operated to evacuate people stranded in Ukraine.
