NSUI president Fairoz Khan, accused of sexual harassment by Congress worker, quits

NEW DELHI: Fairoz Khan, national president of NSUI, Congress' student wing, has resigned from his post following the sexual harassment allegations that were levelled against him during the ongoing #MeToo campaign. Quoting its sources, PTI said Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has accepted Fairoz Khan's resignation. He reportedly tendered his resignation on Monday evening considering the political slugfest that erupted after the #MeToo movement intensified. Fairoz Khan, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, stepped down saying he quit keeping in mind the party's interests. Fairoz Khan said in his resignation letter that he has decided to step down since the charges against him are hurting the party's image, sources said. A Congress party worker from Chhattisgarh has levelled charges of sexual harassment against the NSUI chief. Fairoz Khan, however, has denied the allegations. Acting on the charges, the Congress had set up a three-member committee to look into the issue. The woman, according to PTI, had first complained against Fairoz Khan in June. She had also met Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders demanding action against the NSUI president, who, she alleged, had sexually harassed her and her sister and some other women from the party. A complaint was also filed by the woman against Fairoz Khan at the Parliament Street police station in September, in which she said that she feared for her life and security.
