New Delhi: Overnight violence spiraled in northeast Delhi on Monday night, as the protests over Citizenship Amendment Act turned aggressive, leading to death of a head constable and four others and injuries to at least 50. The violence which unfolded during US President Donald Trump’s visit, has put the national capital on the edge, with administration remaining on its toes to avoid any untoward incident on Tuesday, the second day of US President's visit.

The violence between pro- CAA and anti-CAA protesters turned the national capital into a battlefield on Monday with frenzied protesters torching houses, shops, vehicles and a petrol pump, and hurling stones.

Here are the developments in a nutshell:

  • Five metro stations closed: Five Delhi Metro stations in the North East district will remain closed on Tuesday, metro officals said. Jaffrabad, Maujpur-Babarpur, Gokulpuri, Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar stations on the Pink Line Metro will remain closed and trains are being terminated at Welcome Metro Station.

  • No CBSE centre for Board exams in northeast Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Monday clarified that there are no centres in North-East Delhi for tomorrow's class 12th board examination.

  • All schools to remain closed in violence-affected areas: Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday announced that all government and private schools will remain closed in the violence-affected areas of Delhi.

  • Section 144 in parts of Delhi: After violent protests at Maujpur, Jafrabad area against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Delhi police has imposed Section 144 on some locations in New Delhi.

  • Fire Incidents at 35 places: Incidents of arson were reported at 35 places in northeast Delhi over the night on Monday. A call about the massive blaze was received around 8.30 pm from a tyre market on fire at Gokulpuri area following which 15 fire tenders were sent, the fire department official said. Several shops were gutted in the fire.

  • Jamia committee demands BJP leader Kapil Mishra's immediate arrest: The Jamia Coordination Committee submitted a memorandum of demands to the police on Monday and said BJP leader Kapil Mishra should be arrested for allegedly inciting violence in northeast Delhi. The committee had given a call for protest outside the new police headquarters on Jai Singh Road, but they were escorted to Nizamuddin following meetings between the joint commissioner of police (southern range) and the agitators.

  • AAP leaders camp outside LG's residence to discuss law and order in NE Delhi:  Delhi ministers Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain and other Aam Aadmi Party MLAs camped outside Lt Governor Anil Baijal's residence late Monday night to discuss with him the law and order situation in parts of northeast Delhi.

  • Shah holds urgent meeting over Jaffrabad violence: Union Home Minister Amit Shah called an urgent meeting of top officials of Delhi over the Jaffrabad violence. Meanwhile, Home Secretary A.K. Bhalla said that the agencies are keeping a close watch on the situation and the necessary arrangements have been done to restore peace in the area.

  • Head constable Ratan Lal killed in violence: Ratan Lal (42), a head constable attached to the office of the ACP Gokalpuri, died after he sustained injuries during stone pelting at Gokalpuri.

  • Six police officials injured: Apart from Delhi Police Head Constable Ratan Lal who was killed during the stone pelting incident after suffering a head injury, several other police personnel including Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Shahdra, Amit Sharma, were injured during the clashes.
