New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday unveiled a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at the India Gate. The statue has been installed at the same place where a hologram statue of Netaji was unveiled earlier this year on Parakram Diwas (January 23) by PM Modi to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji.

The grand statue of Netaji has been carved from a monolithic block of granite weighing 280 MT. The unveiling of the statue of Netaji was accompanied to the tune of 'Kadam Kadam Badhaye Jaa', the traditional INA song.

The statue was unveiled at the newly-christened Kartavya Path -- a stretch from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate. The stretch features red granite walkways with greenery all around, refurbished canals, state-wise food stalls, new amenity blocks and vending kiosks.

Here are some key points about the Netaji statue:

  • The 28-feet-tall towering statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is one of the tallest, realistic, monolithic, handmade sculptures in India.

  • A 100-feet-long truck with 140 wheels was specially designed for this monolithic granite stone to travel the 1665 kms from Khammam in Telangana to New Delhi.

  • As per officials of the Ministry of Culture, the grand statue of Netaji has been carved from a monolithic block of granite that weighs 280 MT. After 26,000-man hours of intense artistic endeavour, the granite monolith was chiselled to produce the statue weighing 65 MT.

  • The statue of Netaji is completely hand sculpted using traditional techniques and modern tools. The team of sculptors for executing the statue was led by Mysore-based sculptor Arun Yogiraj. He had earlier created the 12-foot statue of Adi Shankaracharya, unveiled by PM Modi in Kedarnath in 2021.

  • “I have made the model of the idol of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It was further carved by 40 sculptors. We are fortunate that the idol will be unveiled today at India Gate. It's 22 feet long and weighs 7 tonnes. It is made from granite stone,” news agency ANI quoted sculptor Naresh Kumawat as saying.

  • The jet black granite statue of Netaji will be placed under the Grand Canopy to the east of India gate, halfway on the east-west axis to the National War Memorial.
