NCW Demands FIR Against TMC MP Mahua Moitra Over Her 'Crude Remarks' On Rekha Sharma's Hathras Visit

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has initiated legal action against MP Mahua Moitra for her 'derogatory remark' against its chairperson, Rekha Sharma.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has launched legal proceedings against Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra for her disparaging comments about its chairperson, Rekha Sharma. This comes after Moitra targeted Sharma after a video surfaced showing the NCW chairperson at the site of a recent stampede in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), criticised Sharma’s presence at the stampede site, stating, "She is too busy holding up her boss's pyjamas." The NCW swiftly responded, condemning Moitra's remarks and filing a formal complaint with the Delhi Police. Additionally, a letter was sent to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him to address the issue. 

The NCW responded saying, "These crude remarks are not only outrageous but also a severe violation of a woman's right to dignity." The Commission stressed that such language is unbecoming of a Member of Parliament and called for appropriate action to be taken.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra Calls Rekha Sharma 'Serial Offender' 

In her retort, Moitra posted on X, "Come on @DelhiPolice please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella."

Sharing purported screenshots of old posts by Rekha Sharma, Moitra remarked, "Also @DelhiPolice while you’re at it can you please register an FIR against another serial offender under your new Act. I Can Hold My Old Umbrella"

In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the NCW has urged him to look into the matter and take appropriate action against the TMC leader. These crude remarks are not only outrageous but also a severe violation of a woman's right to dignity, the NCW said, as per news agency PTI.

The NCW's letter to the Delhi Police emphasised that Moitra's remarks constitute a violation under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023, and demanded the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against her.
