New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Raigad, and Ratnagiri in Maharashtra, forecasting "extremely heavy rainfall'' over the next 24 hours in many places in Palghar, Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts.


IMD has also alerted for a high tide today which is expected to be over 4.5 metres at 11:37 am.


Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said the metropolis and surrounding areas could get intermittent moderate to heavy rain with "the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places" on Saturday.

As a precautionary measure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has requested Mumbaikars to stay away from the sea shore.


BMC has chalked out a detailed plan for the city which states that if needed people in all the 24 municipal wards will temporarily be shifted to BMC schools.

If it rains heavily, waterlogging at coastal and low lying areas are expected. Temporary arrangements at 299 spots have been made to pump out water in case of flooding or waterlogging.

Officials from the Health Department, Fire Department, and Mumbai police are on alert in case of flooding and evacuation.

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on Friday, with the IMD predicting intermittent moderate to heavy rain and "possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places" in the metropolis and surrounding areas on Saturday.
According to India Meteorological Department's Mumbai centre, the Colaba weather bureau reported 161.4 mm rainfall between 8:30 am and 8:30 pm on Friday. During this period, the Santacruz weather station in the city recorded 102.7 mm rainfall.
