Mukhtar Ansari Death: Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai on Monday called for a thorough investigation into the death of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari. Ansari passed away after suffering a heart attack on Thursday. He was hospitalized at Banda Medical College in the evening after his health deteriorated.

On the question of accusations pertaining to the former MLA's death and Congress trying to reap political benefits, Rai slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party and said that the BJP and its people always do politics of propaganda and fraud.

On the accusation of Ansari's family of him being given poison in jail, the Congress UP chief said that the accusations that are being levelled are not small but big. I understand that this should be investigated. A deep investigation should be conducted into the matter.

It is pertinent to mention that in 2023, Varanasi's MP MLA convicted the gangster-turned-politician in the Awadhesh Rai murder case. Awadhesh Rai was a Congress leader and brother of Ajay Rai. He was shot dead outside Ajay Rai's residence on August 3, 1991, in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi.

On August 3, 1991, Awadhesh was standing outside his brother Ajay's residence in Varanasi's Lahurabir area under Chetganj police station when assailants came in a Maruti van and opened fire on him. Wounded, Awadhesh was admitted to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, Ajay Rai lodged an FIR at Chetganj police station against Mukhtar Ansari, Bhim Singh, Kamlesh Singh, Rakesh, and former MLA Abdul Kalam. Two of the accused, Kamlesh and Abdul Kalam, have died.
