NEW DELHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday alleged that the multi-billion PNB fraud accused deposited money in the bank account of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's daughter. He also claimed that Jaitley's daughter was "on the payroll" of Choksi. Taking to Twitter, the Congress chief alleged that Jaitley "sat on the file and allowed him (Choksi) to flee". He said that the media had "blacked out" the story but the people of the country would not.

Demanding that the finance minister should resign, Rahul Gandhi also gave an ICICI bank account number from which money was allegedly transferred to Jaitley's daughter.

"Arun Jaitley's daughter was on the payroll of thief Mehul Choksi. Meanwhile her FM daddy sat on his file and allowed him to flee (sic).

"She received money.... "It's sad that media has blacked out this story. The people of India won't," he tweeted, using the hashtag 'ArunJaitlieMustResign'.

Rahul Gandhi retreated his claims while addressing a farmers' rally in Chhattisgarh's Raipur as part of the party's campaign for the Assembly elections next month.

"You must have heard about Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, who had stolen Rs 35,000 crore of the country. Choksi deposited lakhs of rupees in the bank account of FM Arun Jaitley's daughter," the Congress leader said.

He said the Finance Minister "did not take any action against Choksi following which he fled the country. He said Congress leaders held a press conference in Delhi on Monday, giving "details" about bank account of Jaitley's daughter "but unfortunately none of the major media houses carried this story. It is sad because the work of the media is to bring out the truth."

The Congress has alleged that Jaitley's daughter and son-in-law, both lawyers, allegedly received a retainership of Rs 24 lakh from Choksi. However, Jaitley's son-in-law had earlier issued a statement stating that his law firm had returned the retainership the moment they came to know that the company was involved in a scam.
